A new study has found out that swingers – straight couples who regularly swap partners and indulge in group sex – have higher risk of Sexually Transmitted Diseases than “dirty” prostitutes.

Published in the British Medical Journal, Dutch researchers have noted that middle-aged swingers especially those over the age of 45 are particularly vulnerable to STDs like chlamydia, gonorrhea, herpes, and HIV among other infections. Since most swingers are not using protection as compared to prostitutes, they are more likely to get the disease and spread it to others.

It has also been pointed out that engaging in sex with random partners who have STDs is not the sole reason for the spread of the disease. Just having sexual contact with more than one person at a time or in rapid succession already promotes the spread of STDs, says Dr. H. Hunter Handsfield of Washington Center for AIDS and STD. A partner can become infected and spread the disease before seeking treatment.

Swingers are also ignored by healthcare services. While it is easy for heathcare to identify prostitutes, gays, and young people who are also high risk groups for STDs, swingers thrive in a hidden community. The number of couples who are swinging remains hidden, thus it is very hard to have them come forward for testing and treatment of Sexually Transmitted Infections.
